You’re Never Too Old to Start—Or to Keep Going

I read something the other day that immediately made me think of so many people out there who want to get healthy but don’t know where to start—or wonder if it’s too late.

Let me introduce you to Don and Joe.

Don Bryant is 68 years old. He’s a retired corrections officer from Portland, Oregon, and he’s still powerlifting and competing internationally. He got into strength training back in the 1970s as a healthy way to manage stress and never looked back. He’ll tell you straight: “Weightlifting is something a lot of older people need to be doing… I plan on lifting into my 90s.”

Then there’s Joe Arica, 61, a volunteer firefighter in Missouri. Joe trains hard year-round with sled pushes, rowing, weightlifting, and box jumps. He recently competed in the “Toughest Firefighter Alive” challenge—a brutal event in full gear.

In 2021, Joe was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had surgery in January and was back competing by May. His doctors credit his fitness and strength with helping him recover fast.

Neither of these men are exceptions because of genetics. They’re proof that it’s never too late to make fitness part of your life—and that strength training truly is medicine.

The message is clear: “Don’t be scared of exercise. Be scared of what happens if you don’t.”

Even walking around the block is a start. Everything helps.

At Adam Clark Fitness, we work with people 40, 50, 60+ every day who want to live longer, move better, and feel more confident in their bodies again. Most of them don’t care about being elite athletes. They just want to stay strong enough to do the things they love—whether that’s hiking, playing with grandkids, or just moving through life with less pain.

And we help them do that with simple, effective, and supportive coaching in a no-intimidation environment.

You don’t have to go it alone.

If you’ve been putting off your fitness goals, waiting for the “right time,” or doubting whether it’s even possible for you—this is your sign.

Let’s chat. I’d love to hear your story and help you take that first step.

You’re never too old to start. But the key is—you just have to start.
