People love to downplay walking.
“It was only a walk.”
“I didn’t really work out.”
But walking counts.
A lot.
It is one of the easiest ways to get more movement into your day without making things complicated. You do not need special equipment. You do not need an hour. You do not need to be in amazing shape first.
You can just go.
A 10-minute walk after dinner counts.
A walk at lunch counts.
A loop around the block counts.
Three short walks in a day still count.
And that is important, because what you do outside the gym matters too.
At Adam Clark Fitness in Brewer, Maine, we talk a lot about strength training because building and keeping muscle is a huge part of staying strong as you get older. But that does not mean every other kind of movement is useless.
Walking is a great way to stay active between workouts. It can help with cardiovascular health, blood sugar control, energy, mobility, and just feeling better overall.
It is also easy to repeat, and that is probably the biggest reason it works.
You do not need every walk to be fast. Some can be easy. Some can be brisk. Some can be 10 minutes because that is all you have time for.
The point is to keep moving.
If you are over 40, 50, or 60, that matters.
Strength training helps build the muscle and strength you need for everyday life. Walking helps you stay active through the rest of the week.
That is a pretty solid combination.
So if you went for a walk today, stop saying it was “just a walk.”
You moved.
That counts.
Do your strength training.
Keep walking.
And do not underestimate the simple stuff just because it is simple.
