I was flipping through a fitness magazine the other day and came across a story that instantly made me think of so many of our members here at Adam Clark Fitness.
Meet Liz Hopwood. She’s 90 years old… and her hip-replacement surgery? Yeah, that’s been postponed.
Why?
Because Liz is too strong and too busy for surgery right now.
Seriously.
She works out twice a week with a trainer and almost every day at home. She’s pain-free, feeling great, and gearing up for two weddings, a class reunion, and a college graduation this summer.
“The doctor wants to postpone the surgery,” Liz says. “He says, why operate if you don’t have any pain?”
Liz didn’t start out superhuman. After losing her husband and moving to a new state, her workouts had dwindled down to daily treadmill walks with “Judge Judy.”
But then she got an email from a gym—just like this one—about fitness later in life. She took a chance. She hasn’t looked back.
“My trainer has made me so strong,” she says. “I can walk upstairs again. I’m amazed. I’m so strong and without any pain.”
Liz noticed her oldest granddaughter wasn’t exercising. She realized that by getting back into fitness herself, she could set an example.
Now, her kids and grandkids tell her they’re exercising—because she does.
Some old friends don’t understand. They shrug her off, saying she’s the “exercise person.” Meanwhile, they’re dealing with pain or worse.
“But this is valuable – it’s the most important thing in my week,” she says. “This pays off in health, in everything.”
And when that surgery eventually happens?
“I probably won’t need a lot of rehabilitation,” she says. “I’m so strong.”
Do you have to be 60, 70, 80, or 90 to start?
Absolutely not.
Most people at Adam Clark Fitness are over 40, but even if you’re not, the goal is the same: live longer, feel better, stay strong, and be ready for whatever life throws your way.
The best time to start was yesterday. The second-best time? Today.
